== Wincanton ==

It had taken several weeks to get back to Earth from SB214. The Yeager had taken some structural damage, and would be out of commission for a while still to come. And Black was stood finally on Earth itself for the first time in two decades. Papaver had offered to come with her, but Black had convinced her friend that she wanted to do this alone.

The hustle and bustle of San Francisco where all Starfleet ships essentially returned to had been far too much for her when she finally beamed down from the massive Earth orbiting space dock situated geographically above. She wasn't averse to people, it's just she found places were quieter without them as a rule.

Deciding not to wear her uniform for the visit, she dressed in civvies. A plain long dark dress and jacket with boots accented with a silver chain. She'd pulled her hair back in a simple ponytail, but nothing too fancy.

She'd rented quarters on the station as it wasn't her intention to stay long. Her belongings were safe up there, but she needed to come planet side to travel across the surface. The public site to site transporter network being what it was, she had to book a time and date for her destination as it wasn't in a major population centre, and she could have hired a private shuttle, but the area was also a little against the modern world, so where would she park a shuttle anyway? Maybe growing up there had had some lasting effect on her she pondered as she stepped into the busy hub transporter, and emerged half a world away.

The busy frenetic atmosphere of the city was replaced with the sounds of the English countryside, and the small market town feel that she'd done everything and anything she could to have run away from. Unlike places like San Francisco where they were massive modern skyscrapers and open concourses and parks, Wincanton was small, brick built and homely. It was one of the places that had somehow survived the destruction of world war three and had been granted a protected heritage status meaning that the 25th century ended just up the road by the roundabout. Which was probably why as a young woman she'd felt the need to get out or be trapped forever.

But now, after all she'd done and where she'd been. Could she call this home?

The walk into town over the bridge was easy going. She looked up at the sign announcing:

[WINCATON The Gateway to Somerset. Twinned with Lahnau (Germany), Gennes Les-Rosiers (France), and Ankh-Morpork (Discworld)]*

And shook her head. It was still there. She walked on crossing the Cale river.

The walk was about a mile through the town and up the hill past the old post office, the Bear, and the Dolphin. All meticulously preserved with nothing out of place looking exactly as they had the day she'd left the town. And then she found herself outside the mustard coloured building with the bay windows contrasted in dark teal that she'd called home for the first twenty ish years of her life.

She'd felt the eyes of the locals following her as she walked through the town. It was a small place and news travelled fast, and people didn't forget.

She knocked on the door of the mustard coloured building, and after a short pause, the door opened revealing a tall old man wearing a cardigan and half moon spectacles.

They both stood still for a couple of seconds more before Maz stepped forward and said; “Hello Dad.”
