Jez listened to Carley as she described the Mardi Gras tradition of beads to get women to flash their gifts to random strangers. Jez loved the mystique of New Orleans, the history, the culture, the mystery. Especially the cultural aspects, being raised by Archeologists, she was fascinated by the religious elements, Catholicism existed right beside the Haitian Vodou it was a fascinating dichotomy. Not to mention that Jez was a huge fan of Gothic fiction, especially the author Anne Rice, her books of the Vampires of New Orleans were amazing.
Jez was excited by the idea, but at what period should they do the Mardi Gras; the modern high-tech sanitized version or say something from the colonial days when New Orleans was a French colony? She especially liked the Indians of New Orleans. The Mardi Gras Indians, also known as Black Masking Indians, are a group of African American carnival participants in New Orleans, Louisiana who celebrate their connections to Native Americans and Africa. The tradition is believed to have originated during the antebellum period when escaped slaves found refuge with Native American tribes in the South.
“Carley, what do you say to create a Mardi Gras from the early colonial period of New Orleans, complete with the Indians? Steamboats, Antebellum Mansions, Horse-drawn carriages, Gas-powered street lights. Tarot Card readers.” Said Jez her voice filled with excitement.
