AT/D04 - Officer's Lounge

Hallowette had maintained her mischievous smile, but allowed it to fall a bit as she noticed Lucy's reaction to her playful comment seemed... was it confusion? Hally had spent an inordinate amount of time with Humans since joining the Diplomatic Corp as a teen, but even more so when she attended the Academy. She had thought her joking lighthearted and jovial, especially given the reputation Klingon physical fitness tended to have, but maybe she used the wrong word? Hally was a natural linguist, but that didn't mean that regional dialects (of which humans seemed to have many) couldn't get mixed up or even that the universal translator was perfect. That was one reason she preferred speaking without the UT. At least then she knew her intended meaning was conveyed in her own words. It allowed more intimacy to hear someone's natural accent - more connection. Language was music, and the Universal Translator for all it's uses and good did take that away - the cost of a multicultural and vast galaxy, she supposed.

Hally began to address her phrasing, to ask Lucy if she had offended or had been unclear when Aeryn spoke up.

"I haven't done any rock climbing in a while, but I have to agree that calisthenics does sound interesting. I tend to do a lot of hiking, and I'm always up for having company if you'd like to join me sometime?".

Aeryn had addressed the other redhead at the table and Hally couldn't help but sense that there might be a bit of history between the two driving the offer. Of course Lt. Commander Miller was the superior science officer, and Devereaux her subordinate, but whatever was unspoken in the offer seemed deeper than just work related drama. It was none of the Bajoran/Trill's business of course, and she had nothing she could add anyway.

“Given my track record, hiking would be safer. The calisthenics program is really more of a melee combat simulation. Somebody found it in the holosuites at Quarks. There were two versions, one created by a Lieutenant Worf and the other by a J. or C. Dax.”

The Dax symbiote. A legend, even among other species. And one Hallowette had grown up hearing about many times. Her Grandmother had been friends with Curzon years prior, and the Dax symbiotes influence is what had driven her now very successful mother's entrance into Starfleet. The mention of Dax still sat in her pouch oddly though. To hear symbiote hosts referred to so casually. On Trill there was a reverence for them that was almost holy. Almost.

Hally's smile was a bit more forced than she had expected, but it eased naturally into something more genuine as she continued the conversation, "I met Ambassador Worf once as a teen. I think we were at a conference on Risa. He's an impressive man. First Klingon in Starfleet. Very measured and calm. I can't imagine working for him on a Starship though." she said with a chuckle as she continued, "And I hope I'm not imposing, but if any hiking takes place, I'd love to join in if there's room. I adore the outdoors and seeing new places."
