==Security Senior Chief Petty Officer Samantha Reagan==

She had crossed paths before but that was an informal breakfast so she wasn't sure what sort of reaction she would get from her new Security Chief.

Sam's experience was extensive; she had been a decorated Federation Marine before they were disbanded but that proved to be beneficial as she was assigned to the USS Geronimo where she soon found herself in a relationship with the Chief Engineer. The Geronimo missions were varied with plenty of opportunity to work with and develop a relationship with Keir77 who later became the First officer.

That proved to be short lived and they were then transported to the USS Titania for two missions, and where they were married. However, that ship was taken out of service and Keir found hirself appointed the FO of a new Command, namely the ship they were now both on.

She had grown used to moving and they both were now just settled into the USS Zephyr. And now the time came for Samantha to meet her DH, whom she had recently met.

I wonder what he is going to be like as a Boss?

Time would tell, and she settled down to wait for Lt Gath's arrival.

Senior Chief Petty Officer Reagan had been paying attention and picked up on Gath's work habits. He tended to always be early for a shift on the Bridge and made regular rounds of his own to check in on how things were going with his people. He walked into the Security Office right about when she thought he would.

Carrying a steaming beverage, he moved to his office and without barely a glance he said, "Chief, you're with me." Another NCO had been about to approach him, but at hearing those words, the man suddenly remembered he had someplace else to be.

As he got near his desk, he stopped and turned to her, extending a hand and sounding more official than he had in their previous encounters. His handshake was like a vise, but he didn't use too much strength, as he was well aware of how much pressure he should or should not use and this was very measured.

== Presuming she shakes the hand... ==

He then gestured to a chair as he took his behind the desk, "I have to say that I was curious about having someone of your rank on my staff with this being a ship the size that it is. However, a quick glance at your records seemed to explain it. When potential conflicts of interest enter my arena, I tend to eliminate them, but this is not one that is mine to contend with. I'm going to trust in MY chain of command and your professionalism and leave it at that...but that's not why I called you in here with me."

He leaned back in his chair and picked up his drink, a smile found it's way onto his chiselled face, "I respect your extensive record and intend to use it to our advantage. I'm going to presume that you have more than average experience with VIP details. As this Trill negotiator is so well known, I intend to treat them as a high level diplomat. I want you to select the team for full time security. We might need to add a few people to the rotation if the CO has his formal dinner, but otherwise we're talking Primary Asset bodyguard detail. I don't anticipate that things will go bad, but I want people around the Asset that aren't afraid to got hot, but have the control that they won't do so unless it can't be avoided. It takes a level head to know the difference. How do you feel about that?"

He finally took a sip of his steaming drink as he waited for her to reply.

The COS entered the outer office and Samantha was on her feet to greet him. A junior NCO was also present but Sam said nothing to them; not wanting to interfere with what Lt Gath would choose to start with. He motioned for her to follow and shook the proffered hand, and feeling the pressure from his grip, more than matched it before it broke.

Gath would read nothing emotional from her actions, posture nor her facial expression, and nodding subtly to his drink Samantha approached the replicator and returned with a large Raktajino and after testing it with a sip; sat it on a spot on the Chief's desk which was clearly made for such. She then sat back in the chair facing him, noting that he appeared not only calm and informal; but quietly bemused?

Sam quietly waved off his initial concerns with a nod, and then returned her expression to neutrality and simply listened.

Nothing on the Chief's face betrayed any emotional reaction, but the woman was clearly weighing every word and gesture Gath made as he got into the 'meat' of the briefing and as she had expected it was about the VIP. She had read through all the available data and was at least as well prepared as one could be, and when he finished; she also took the steaming mug from the desk, took a good draught of it and then sat back; the mug in her lap. At no time did her gaze leave the Lieutenant's.

"Outside of yourself I feel I would be the most qualified to provide such and being female the Ambassador may feel more comfortable, but at no time will I be offended if someone else is chosen for a PA assignment."

She paused appearing to be choosing her words; "I am certain that you have thoroughly read my CV and are aware that I possess a short-range empathic sense. As to where that comes from in my familial heritage I am unaware; but it is passive and unobtrusive and could prove useful, not only aboard but also wherever the lady is meeting with the two factions.

I do speak a small number of Federation languages, but Trill is not among them. As to what else you might wish to ask I am at your service Sir."

She returned the mug and took a sip to moisten her palate and waited patiently for further discussion.

Gath gave a nod of understanding, "Yes, with rare exception, most people are more comfortable with females as security, as they tend to feel less intimidated by them.  I want our guest to feel comfortable, yet secure. I also favor taking advantage of every advantage a potential adversary might give, so the more someone might underestimate your team, the better. If refuse hits the impeller, it is your skills that will make the difference. Having experience with high value targets, knowing how to stay out of the way and blending into the background, showing a high degree of discretion while understanding protocols for customs and courtesies is something that is hard to come by and takes time to train. In the event such a dinner or state event takes place, I will also likely be in attendance, but if I am not, I will be in contact and available at all times to back you up."

He took another sip and then segued into an intake briefing, "Given your rank and levels of responsibility on this ship, there should be little that I know that you are not read into. My door is open, ALWAYS. If you need to talk, then I'm there to listen. I have a strong distaste for people that say what they think I want to hear, but I have respect for those who tell me what I need to hear. It also appears that you're quite familiar with squad based light infantry tactics. You have no idea how glad I am that you bring that experience with you. I had the benefit of certain training that went beyond normal introductory exposure, but the majority of our people do not have the benefit of that training. I'm sure that you can appreciate the value of having it and not needing it, than needing it and not having it. I intend to conduct some training of our people and running a number of exercises to help them become proficient in such tactics. I intend for us to be prepared and that you will play a big part in that training."

Looking at her across his steaming cup as he took another sip, "I would now like to hear what expectations you have of me, and you're encouraged to ask any questions you might have."

Sam sorta liked this guy despite his tendency to ramble a bit, but then he hadn't finished his morning beverage so she was willing to cut him some slack and decided to take an audible and see how composed he really was and allowed a full-on grin to momentarily brighten her face. adding as he finished.

"Well, you sure can talk the talk like a Senior Officer if you don't mind me sayin Lieutenant."

Samantha paused and sipped more of her Raktajino watching for a reaction; sometimes baiting a bear got ya bit, but she figured this guy was not THAT tightly wound and did have a full measure of self control or he wouldn't be where he was.

At an appropriate point she resumed speaking ready now to answer his questions. "You need to know that I am never gonna trade on who I am married to and s/he wouldn't back me up if I did.

I looked through our roster and we have three others who do have personal protection training just as you and I have, so that potentially gives us six. I figured that was what we were going to talk about and you have one of my candidates in the outer office. He is here a full half hour early which says good things, and by now the other NCO should be here. The junior officer's name should now be on your tablet along with the NCOs by name. I have also added their CVs to what I gave you."

She paused assessing his facial expression before continuing. "I am very experienced as the Senior NCO', a rank I held on the Titania so I see my job is to have shi! on your desk before you ask for it, and I see your job is to facilitate all that our people need to do their jobs and cover us should something go south. As for training, all of the three have it, but I will ask that you brief the officer to be a team player. They are not as experienced as our NCO's are and I hope they will look at this as an opportunity to gain experience, do you agree with that Sir?"

At Sam's comment, his grin widened a bit, "I had some experience before entering Star Fleet and even with Star Fleet, my field experience taught me a great deal."

He didn't elaborate on what his field experience had been nor did he clarify what he had done before entering Star Fleet. He felt that might be a conversation to have another time.

At hearing the members she had selected, he nodded, "Good. I'll need you to lead the small greeting party for the arrival of the dignitary, so suit up and see your team is squared away for the brief moment of spit and shine. After the arrival, I anticipate that they can be on standby and you'll see to the rotation of someone available outside the VIP quarters and so forth."

Once she had given her version of how she saw their jobs, he gave a brief chuckle, "Said plainly enough. Yes, I do expect a great deal from my people, but I also think they have a right to depend on me as well. So long as they are giving me their very best, I will always be there for them, doing the same. Experience is the best teacher. I look forward to designing some good training programs for us."

He stood and his look gave the impression the meeting was over and he was about to make a few of his rounds. "I'm glad to have you on the crew. Let's get to work."

He was well mannered, had a sense of humor and a solid work ethic. Gath may be a Klingon, but he never once referred to his heritage, as so many Klingons typically did in meetings such as this. He seemed to genuinely enjoy speaking with Sam, but he obviously had a number of things going on in his head. This might well be the beginning of a very good working relationship.
