ZE/D01 - Bridge
And then there was that private message from Ensign Powl, Ameen thought with a flicker of amusement.

Citing Starfleet regulations at me about my own title. He's not wrong, but... I'll deal with that later...

Just as he was about to turn his attention to the conflicting messages from Sickbay, his console chimed softly with an incoming message. It was from his yeoman, as expected.

[MESSAGE from PO3 Jensen, H. to Ameen, M. - Priority: Standard - Subject: Draft Report for Fleet Captain Vakir - Per Your Order]
[Commander,
As requested, I have drafted the priority message to Fleet Captain Vakir. It is attached and ready for your review and final authorization.
-PO Jensen]

Attached was a draft that read:
[TO: VAKIR, A., FLEET CAPTAIN, DS9
FROM: AMEEN, M., COMMANDER, ACTING CO, USS ZEPHYR
SUBJECT: Mission Update, USS Zephyr

We have arrived at Trill and made contact. We have received our principal, Mediator Kestir. However, there has been an unexpected change in the specific nature of our VIP. The original host, Aed'na Tlapo, passed away just prior to our arrival. The Kestir symbiont was successfully transferred to a new host, C'had. This new host required an urgent, time-sensitive medical evaluation upon beaming aboard, which is currently underway in our Sickbay. As a result, our departure from Trill has been rocky and slow pending the medical decision but we are now on our way at warp 5. That speed is kept in order to maintain the Ambassador's strict schedule. All ship's systems are green and the crew is performing well. End report.]

Good. She followed the instructions to the letter. Stuck to the facts, left out the... colorful details about our guest...

He quickly typed his authorization. "Excellent work Hanna. Send it."

With that handled, his thoughts returned to the "conundrum" Doctor O'Fee had mentioned, followed by the more reassuring "condition green" message. The hour she'd requested for a full report was nearly up.

Alright, Doctor O'Fee, he thought, his gaze drifting towards the turbolift. What's the verdict?..

His FO was back on the bridge and checking in with the crew regarding the dinner prep too. It was good to see everyone is busy and doing their part.

A few seconds later Amila's typically chipper voice could be heard over Keir's comm responding back.

[Lieutenant Ra'an to Commander Keir: Smooth as can be down here. Everything is good to go, Torok and I are really just working on little details like music and such right now. But, all the important stuff is locked in and taken care of. The lounge is in order, and the meal service is on schedule as planned.]

Evie came to the Bridge with her report in hand, there was some information both on and off of the report that should be gone over. The parts she wanted she wanted to go over that were on the report, the information she wanted to go over more wasn't on the report.

At this point Evie wasn't sure how to feel, other than a little strange. She seen a lot of people like him before, but they were in a pub. All of those could be dismissed as Alcohol fueled bad decisions, not in Sickbay unless they came from the pub in the first place.

"Commanders." Addressing both the Commanding and First Officer. "Can the three of us have a private chat, there is parts of the report I would prefer to keep off official records." Evie had a feeling both would have some idea about what she was talking about.

Keir was pleased that the mission seemed ready to start. The young replacement ambassador was being checked medically; a prudent decision by the CMO since there could easily be issues with such a rushed and sudden transference of consciousness between the new and likely untested host and the consciousness of the symbiont.

S/he was at that time glad to be unaware of what was entailed in such a complicated and possibly risky medical procedure and remained confident in the skills of the medical staff.
At that time Keir received a report from the CSO who was proceeding very well with the party preparations and all seemed well.

As s/he was considering what s/he had heard; the Chief Medical Officer arrived on the bridge addressing both hir and Cdr. Ameen

"Commanders ,can the three of us have a private chat, there is parts of the report I would prefer to keep off official records.?"

Without showing any of hir confusion Keir prepared to stand and follow the CO.

The comm had barely closed on his report to Fleet Captain Vakir when Doctor O’Fee arrived on the bridge, her expression serious. She addressed both him and Commander Keir, asking for a private conversation about a 'conundrum' that was best kept off the official records.

A conundrum? After everything else today, of course there's a conundrum...

Ameen thought, exchanging a brief, weary glance with Keir. He saw his First Officer was already on hir feet, ready to act. It was good to know Keir was in lockstep with him.

"Of course, Doctor," Ameen said, his voice calm and steady. He stood up from his command chair. "Whatever you have to report, we'll hear it privately. The briefing room."

He looked around the bridge to see who would take command.

Ra'an, Gath, and Powl are all off-bridge. That leaves... His gaze settled on the helm station. Lieutenant Krandall. He's a Lieutenant, he's at the conn. He's the senior officer remaining. It's his.

"Lieutenant Krandall," Ameen said, his voice carrying command authority. "You have the bridge. Maintain present course and speed. Alert us if there are any changes in our guest's medical status or any new communications from Trill."

With that, he gave a nod to his FO and the CMO.

"Commander. Doctor." He turned and led the way towards the briefing room, the weight of another unknown problem settling on his shoulders. The quiet part of this mission just kept getting shorter.

Krandall stood from his station to face the Captain and give the simple reply, "Aye, sir. I have the Bridge."

In textbook fashion, he repeated the Captain's own orders back to him, making it clear that he had heard them as stated. He then waited, standing at Parade Rest, until the Captain moved to the exit. Only then did he move to the Center Chair and brought up the small display that would give him a view of the current navigation details, so he could continue to monitor the situation.

To be honest, he had nothing to do, sitting at the Helm. He was monitoring various sensor readings, but they were currently all mundane and it was a challenge for him to remain awake. This small change of pace was quite welcome. Still, it was better than being a civilian. He had been a Marine combat pilot and had always been a bit of an adrenaline junkie. He was right at home in a fast paced operations tempo where split second decisions decided life and death. He could accept that he would no longer be part of that sort of life, living on the edge. What was hard was that he was fairly certain that he could never return to a "normal" life as a civilian. He would put money on the fact that he would likely go crazy in about a week. Living the life of luxury on a ship as a Helmsman might be boring compared to his past assignments, but it was still on a ship and facing the vastness of the void. You also never knew what tomorrow might bring.

The mission was proceeding at a slow pace. The Trill Ambassador was a work in progress, having very recently had a change of hosts. The new young host was thrust into the heady world of interstellar peacekeeping, as well as the unexpected hormonal pressures which had been presenting a challenge, but following the meeting with Cdr. Ameen , the CMO and hirself there had apparently been an arrangement which hinted at a possible solution, and that appeared to be a situation a bit more under control, and with things a bit more quiet it seemed like a good time to meet their newest Security officer; namely Midshipman Michael Johnson.

Realizing that the Commander would likely want to be present s/he tapped hir comm. badge. "Keir to Ameen; I am going to summon our newest Security Midshipman to the bridge; if it is convenient for you to be present; otherwise I will handle it; Keir, out."

Tapping the bridge comm, s/he spoke; "Commander Keir77, to Midshipman Michael Johnson. Greetings; please make your way to the bridge at your earliest convenience and bring the Paad with your transfer orders. Once you enter the bridge please pause until you see that either or both of the Command officers have no one before them; then you should proceed to stand in front of us. You can then introduce yourself and hand me the Paad with your orders. This is a formality which will officially make you a member of our crew as well as an opportunity for us to greet you and welcome you aboard officially.
Once the formal greeting has been made, I will then introduce you to your department head Lieutenant Gath, our Chief of Security. I look forward to greeting you, Commander Keir77, out."

S/he then tapped hir badge, "Keir to Gath. I have summoned your new officer to the bridge and once he has met the Commander and myself I will hand him over, Keir out."

>> Briefing Room >>

The briefing room door slid open, and Ameen stepped back onto the bridge, Commander Keir 77 following a moment after him. The productive buzz of the crew working on their various assignments was a welcome sound. Morad had just stepped into his ready room to grab a report PADD when his comm badge chirped with Commander Keir's update. He saw that Keir had already taken the initiative in summoning their newest crew member.

Good, Ameen thought, a sense of satisfaction settling in. Keir is already thinking and acting like a First Officer. Handling new personnel arrivals is exactly what s/he should be doing...

He walked over to the center of the bridge and took his seat, looking at Keir who had taken the First Officer's chair beside him. He gave hir a nod of approval.

"Commander," he said, his voice calm and professional, "I received your message. Good initiative summoning Midshipman Johnson. It's important we welcome him properly."

He settled into the chair, his posture still one of command but more at ease than a formal standing reception. The 'conundrum' with their VIP was an ongoing issue, but the day-to-day business of running a starship had to continue. And that included welcoming new faces.

Alright, Midshipman Michael Johnson, Ameen thought, his gaze fixed on the turbolift doors. Let's see what you've got...

Michael stepped out of the lift and on to the bridge. It took a moment to take everything in. He waited for the center chair to be clear.  He couldn’t help but smile he had been waiting for this since his brother left for the academy.

"Well Steven, time to make you proud." He whispered to himself

Michael took a deep breath and made his way to the center of the bridge. He stood at attention trying to make a good impression.

“Midshipman Michael Johnson reporting as order, Sir” He said clearly as he held out the padd with his orders on it.

Keir nodded gratefully regarding the CO's compliment for hir initiative in bringing their new Security officer to the bridge and kept busy til s/he heard the lift door open and discharge their newest officer.

He paused momentarily, took a noticeable breath and then proceeded to the greeting. [Midshipman Michael Johnson reporting as order, Sir]
He said clearly as he held out the padd with his orders on it.

Keir nodded taking the Paad. Michael would note a slim attractive looking brunette female of average height, with a warm smile she offered; as s/he greeted him.

"Welcome to the USS Zephyr Midshipman Johnson; I am Lieutenant Commander Keir77; the Acting First Officer.

I can see by your records that you come well prepared for your role in our crew. On a personal note, you should be aware that I am Hermat and though my appearance is female I do ask that you continue to address me as Sir.

Commander Ameen will address you regarding our mission and then you will meet the Chief of Security Lieutenant Gath to begin your integration into our team; so Welcome aboard."

Just before s/he took a fresh look over his Paad Keir, turned to address Gabe, "Commander Ameen, at your pleasure sir."

As the CO approached to retake his Center Chair, Tom stood and relinquished his temporary control of the Bridge. The CO was engaged in a conversation with the FO, so he knew not to bother with the formality of stating the obvious. Had there been anything worthy of updating the Captain about, Tom would have done so, but in this instance he felt it was wiser to simply let it go.

Tom had tapped the display with his hand as he stood, logging out and returning it to the default screen. He now returned to the Helm, to make sure they didn't accidentally wander into some spatial anomaly along the way.

Gath stepped off the lift and the doors hissed closed behind him. He saw the hew officer reporting and did not interrupt the moment for him. There was no rush. This was a big moment for the Midshipman, reporting to his first Commanding officer on his first ship.

Ameen watched from his command chair as Commander Keir handled the initial greeting for the new midshipman. Hir explanation of being Hermat was smooth and direct, a necessary piece of information delivered with professional grace.

Good. S/he's handling this well. Exactly what a First Officer should do...

When Keir turned the moment over to him, Ameen gave hir a slight nod of acknowledgment.

"Thank you, Commander."

He then focused his attention on the young man standing at attention in the center of the bridge. He looked nervous, but also determined. Ameen could respect that.

"Midshipman Michael Johnson," Ameen began, his voice calm and welcoming but still carrying the weight of command. "Welcome to the USS Zephyr. It's good to have you aboard."

He gestured towards the PADD that Keir was holding.

"Commander Keir will process your official orders. As you've probably gathered, you're joining us at a... dynamic time. We are on a high-priority diplomatic escort mission with some unique variables. We're all new to this ship, and we're learning her and each other as we go. Flexibility and a willingness to adapt are key."

Ameen's gaze flicked over to the security station, where Lieutenant Gath was observing.

"Your department head is Lieutenant Gath. He runs a tight department, and I expect you to listen, learn, and give him your absolute best. Security is paramount on this mission."

He then gestured towards the Klingon officer.  "Lieutenant Gath, if you would." Then looked back to the midshipman. "Midshipman, Lieutenant Gath will see to your station assignment and brief you on the specifics of your duties. Welcome aboard."

Okay. Another piece in place, Ameen thought as he settled back into his chair, trusting Gath and Keir to handle the rest of the midshipman's integration. Now, back to the larger problem of our... guest... and when Sickbay is going to give me a report...

==Security Senior Chief Petty Officer Samantha Reagan==

As the Senior NCO Samantha had been informed of the arrival and introduction of the newest Security Officer and made it a point to get to the bridge so that she could be a part of the team greeting the Middie.

But Samantha; as a veteran Security NCO; wanted to be present initially to represent the NCO's that the Midshipman would be dealing with but also to be there to get a handle on how he handled this moment. She had been on the bridge at the station already when the Midshipman arrived and was greeted.

Lt Gath arrived in time to witness it and she nodded appropriately to her DH as they both observed the intro. Johnson seemed composed and spoke clearly to the command team.

Excellent, he seems to be handling this well.

The handover from the CO was smooth and she waited along with her DH for the Midshipman to approach.

There wasn't much going on at the moment for anyone, this was a diplomatic mission that shouldn't require too much of anything from Science. It will give him an opportunity to look into something out there, he never really knew what was out there until finding something.

The other thing was the change in Command, Keir was once again First Officer and he was happy for hir. It was a short lived run the first time around, and now here was another. Here Keir would have another chance to truly shine, it takes a lot to fill the position a lot more for the step above that. The best thing he could do was recalibrate the systems, if there was a need for it Science was going to answer the call.

“Always Sir.” He said, trying to sound confident.

Michael was excited to start, and diplomatic missions were usually boring, a lot of escorting the diplomats around and keeping them out of trouble, but this would give him time to settle into his new position and have time to learn the ship.

Michael made his way over to Lieutenant Gath at the security station, one of his best friends at the academy was a Klingon, K’Tor. Knowing first impressions meant a lot he approached with confidence and stood at attention in front of his new boss.

“Sir Midshipman Michael Johnson, reporting for duty.”

He stood there in front of Gath and the other security officer next to him.

"Always Sir." Midshipman Johnson said with an air of confidence.

Ameen nodded at him and watched from his command chair as Midshipman Johnson reported to Lieutenant Gath. He saw the Senior Chief Petty Officer, Samantha Reagan, was also there to greet the new arrival and Lieutenant Jukish Keti was now manning the science station. It was a small piece of normal ship business in the middle of a very not-normal mission.

Good. Gath has his team in order. The Midshipman seems to be handling his first day well enough...

He gave a slight nod to Commander Keir, who had handled the initial welcome perfectly.

S/he's settling into the First Officer role well. Very well...

With the immediate personnel matter handled, he found his gaze drifting towards the turbolift doors, almost unconsciously. He wondered how Amila was doing with the dinner prep. She took charge of it so enthusiastically. A small smile touched his lips before he caught himself and focused back on the console.

Right. Focus, Morad. Plenty of time for... other thoughts... later...

He pulled up the duty roster Keir had prepared earlier, reviewing the upcoming shift changes. The day-to-day business of running the ship had to continue, no matter what diplomatic (or personal) chaos was brewing in the background.

Gath did not present himself as what one might think of as a typical Klingon. He was extremely well groomed and his uniform very clean and sharp looking. His movements were fluid, yet precise. The expression on his face was almost Vulcan in the lack of emotion and his eyes were unwavering as he took a step forward to greet the newest member of his department.

"Welcome to the team, Midshipman Johnson. I'm Lieutenant Gath, the ship's Chief of Security." He gestured to the Tall woman next to him and added, "This is Senior Chief Petty Officer Samantha Reagan. You would be wise to listen to any wisdom she offers you. It is rare to have such an experienced mentor, so don't waste the opportunity." He paused, then continued, "In the days ahead, I'm sure that you will become well acquainted with the many protocols and duties that you will be expected to become an expert on, as a Security Officer of this ship. However, tonight you will have get to know the other senior members of the Staff and be given the privilege of attending a formal dinner that is being given for our diplomatic guest. You will be required to attend in full Mess Dress Uniform and I expect to see you mingling during the cocktail hour before the dinner. An officer needs to not only know how to be victorious in combat, but needs to also have skills of conversation and tact as well. Are you up for the challenge?"

A hint of a grin appeared on his face and he waited to see how Mid Johnson responded.

Gath was not what Michael had come to expect from a Klingon; he was the complete opposite of K’Tor. The slight grin on Gath’s face as he stood in front of Michael, gave him a feeling that Gath might not be easy to impress. Even though Michael did not like social gatherings, and was not expecting to be at a formal dinner on day one. He expected to be patrolling the ship or standing guard somewhere for the first month

I hope I remembered to pack my dress uniform.

“I’m up for all challenges that may come sir.” He said confident.

Michael then turned to the woman standing next to Gath. He was always willing to learn from those who had more experience and he had no plans on wasting any chance of learning from someone with more experience than him.

“Ma’am I look forward to learning from you.”

Keir's comm. chimed and alerted hir to a message indicating that the ship's newest Middie; a Tactical officer was aboard and ready.

Kier showed the message to the CO and then tapped hir comm badge. "Ensign Michael Brennan; this is the First Officer Commander Keir77; please make your way to the main bridge. At an appropriate moment step forward and stand in front of the command officers.

You should arrive with your transfer orders; present them to me and then make a formal introduction of yourself to us. Once the Captain and I have had the opportunity to meet you I will introduce you to your department head. This is a formal greeting and by giving me your orders and meeting us you will then formally become a member of this crew, Commander Keir77 out."

[Brennan to Commander Keir77, acknowledged I am on my way.]

The voice was firm and didn't waver. Despite his nerves about his first duty assignment, he had an air of confidence about him.

The turbolift doors opened to the bridge with a calm, but excited Midshipman slowly progressing onto the bridge. It took him a minute as he stood in awe of the majesty. The main bridge was truly a sight to see with the personnel bustling back and forth. He observed the center chair and noticed a common set of Captain and Commander residing in the center.

As he observed, he noticed another new midshipman leaving the center post shortly after reporting in. He wasn't much to look at. There was a presence about him, but not a hulking one by any means. He only stood five feet nine and had a firm, muscular build. He believed very much in the concepts of staying as much in shape as possible. If something transpired that resulted in a fist fight, he wanted to be on the advantaged side.

Out of respect, he kept his hair in a classic high and tight cut for his family history. His brown hair was always properly groomed, and his green eyes would stare down even the strongest man.

He reviewed the PADD in his hand, pressed a couple of buttons that would direct the documents toward the transfer orders, and proceeded to the command chair once the conversation took a break. He stood to attention and in that same firm voice announced, "Midshipman Michael Brennan reporting for duty, sir!

Ameen gave his First Officer a nod of agreement as Keir finished the comm call.

"You're right, Commander. Every new hand is welcome, especially a Tactical officer."

His attention then shifted to the turbolift as the young Midshipman arrived. He watched the man take in the bridge, observing his posture and the firm, confident way he carried himself. When Brennan stepped forward and announced himself, Ameen gave him his full attention.

Confident. Good. He'll need it on this mission...

"Midshipman Michael Brennan," Ameen began, his voice calm and clear, carrying the easy authority of command. "On behalf of the crew, welcome to the USS Zephyr."

He let his gaze linger for a moment, a silent assessment. "You join us on the eve of a delicate and important mission. I expect every officer under my command to perform their duties to the absolute best of their ability. I trust you will be no exception."

He gave a slight nod, a gesture of both welcome and dismissal. "Commander Keir will see you are introduced to your department head and properly situated. Welcome aboard, Midshipman."

While the Captain greeted the officer Keir took the time to read through his Service and Academy and his choices in Academy minors did speak well of his understanding of what sort of issues a Star Fleet officer might face and the issue of the extra year to complete the Academy also caught hir eye.

The Co finished his greeting, adding; [Commander Keir will see you are introduced to your department head and properly situated. Welcome aboard, Midshipman.]

"Thank you Captain. Your Academy record is quite interesting Midshipman. Choosing to take training in Security and Medical certainly makes you a versatile and useful member of the crew. That , and you working your way back to make up for the one Academy year failure shows a measure of your character."

Stepping up to Brennan, Keir nodded towards the active helmsman, "Lieutenant Torok Powl will be your Department head, but he is currently on active duty, so you will need to find a time that works for both of you to get to know one another.

Welcome aboard Midshipman Brennan."

Brennan listened intently to both captain and commander as he stood patiently.  Once they had both finished speaking, he relaxed a little and added to the conversation.

"Thank you for such a warm welcome to the ship. I am looking forward to serving with such a fine crew, especially with you all engaging on a new mission.  I look forward to being briefed on my responsibilities and how I can best serve this crew."

Not to mention, if it is something this important, can I really be that important in such a role as a midshipman?

He let the thought go away as he turned his gaze toward the helmsman operating the panel.

A Vulcan!  That seems like a tactically sound choice of a chief.  Thinking things out logically, like a game of chess, while the fight engages.

He redirected his attention back to the command station...

"Being that Lieutenant Powl is presently occupied sirs, how may I best begin to serve this ship and her crew?

Ameen heard the midshipman's direct and respectful question. He gave a slight, almost imperceptible nod of approval.

Eager to contribute. A good sign...

"An excellent question, Midshipman," Ameen replied, his voice maintaining its steady, calm tone. "Initiative is a valuable quality on any vessel, especially this one."

He glanced briefly at Keir before returning his attention to Brennan, providing a clear path forward.

"For now, you are with Commander Keir. S/he will provide you with the necessary orientation materials. Your first task is to familiarize yourself with the Zephyr's tactical systems, our current operational status, and the duty roster. When Lieutenant Powl is relieved from the helm, you will be fully prepared to receive your first official assignment from him."

"That will be all. Welcome aboard, Mr. Brennan. Dismissed."  He offered a final, professional nod.

With that, Ameen's attention returned to the main viewscreen, his part in the formal welcome concluded. He trusted his Senior Officers to handle the rest.

Keir listened while Cdr Ameen greeted the newest officer and then responded to his request ; "Being that Lieutenant Powl is presently occupied sirs, how may I best begin to serve this ship and her crew?"

Keir kept hir thoughts to hirself as the CO suggested that s/he could provide an option to assist in getting the young Midshipman ready for duty as an auxiliary helmsman,

Keir managed to hide the grin in response to the eager request from their newest Middie and once Cdr. Ameen had made his feelings known s/he thought quickly and nodded to the young officer.

"Come with me", s/he asked and took the new Tactical Middie to the other side of the bridge. "I am going to temporarily reconfigure this console so you can practice a series of Tactical exercises. It will not only give you some practice with piloting this particular vessel but also run some simulations ranging from navigating a minefield to attempting to throw off the pursuit of a much larger unknown hostile ship."

Once s/he had finished, Keir lastly sent a head's up to the CTO informing him that he had a new middie ON the bridge who was doing some tactical drills til he became available to greet him.

"Have a seat. I will also take a look through what you chose to do while you were here; but the CTO will likely have some input for you as well"

Brennan listened to the Captain and Commander intently as he awaited them to finish.  He was having a hard time holding himself together before beginning to serve properly.  He had waited a long time for this moment, and only now was his real trial about to begin.

He nodded to the captain in response to his dismissal and turned toward Keir 77 as she was describing his initial training.  As soon as she said, "Come with me," he was following directly behind without skipping a beat.  He watched her reconfigure the console for training purposes and studied closely how he could mimic this function for private training later.

"Have a seat.  I will also take a look through what you chose to do while you were here; but the CTO will likely have some input for you as well."  Hearing this, he began scrolling through different features on the panel.

Given that they brought up the potential of needing an interim helm operator, it would be good to familiarize oneself with the operation of this ship as well as manipulating it for tactical maneuvers.

Brennan began to input instructions that started off with basic starship movement, specifically with this ship, as well as designating combat situations between one, two, and three different vessels.  He analyzed carefully, trying to identify where the sensor blind spots were as well as areas where the phasers and torpedoes would struggle to target properly with different maneuvers.

Keir was pleased to see the new Tactical officer become familiar with this ship's interface and watched on hir console as he worked through various scenarios. What the Ensign was doing appeared to hir to be quite appropriate and she hoped helpful. S/he stepped up and addressed Lt Powl. "Lieutenant I have set some tactical scenarios for your new Middie; perhaps you could oversee those going forward?"

Returning to hir chair she then moved on to the newest Midshipman which happily proved to be a new Engineer. Tapping hir comm badge s/he spoke:

"Greetings Midshipman A'kilees, welcome to the Zephyr. I am the First Officer Commander Keir77 and I am welcoming you to proceed to the bridge along with your transfer orders to be greeted by myself and the Captain and be formally welcomed to the crew.

Once you arrive, simply watch for an appropriate moment to present yourself to the Captain and I and hand me your transfer orders. [Midshipman A’kilees here. Acknowledged, I will be at the Bridge presently]

A few moments later, the turbolift doors opened up and two human crewmembers exited followed by a tall slender saurian wearing an Engineering uniform with a satchel slung to his side. He stood there for a moment inspecting the entirety of the bustling bridge and soon looked towards the center of the room and began to approach the First Officer and the Captain.

The large saurian midshipman stood a full foot over the First Officer and the Captain as he looked down towards the both of them, his scaly skin was a green gray hue and large eyes appeared as deep pools of blackness but with the light of the bridge a close observer would see that an emerald tinge was visible in the reflected gleam.

“Captain Ameen” he said in a deep yet gravely voice modulated by the Universal Translator nodding towards the Captain, “Commander Keir” acknowledging the first officer with a nod as well. “Midshipman A’kilees Peleus re-*clickclick*-porting in. It is a pleasure to meet you both. Here are my transfer orders.” he stated respectfully as he reached into his satchel and produced a dataPADD towards the First Officer.

Powl walked onto the bridge scanning for the general status of the ship. He was arriving after changing his uniform after the formal gathering for the diplomatic guest. His interaction with the guest of honor was nothing short of the absolute farthest stretch of the word...interesting. While the original presentation of the personality of the diplomatic guest was accurately described as flamboyant. Even that word seemed to lack a little lack luster in comparison to the persona observed in the transporter room and subsequent locations as rumored through the ship scuttle-butt. However, the duality is what seemed the most fascinating. Although the bright and vitality of the original presentation; Powl observed a sharp change in disposition and visage upon demand of a more serious tone.

The charisma had remained the same, however it had quickly pivoted to an individual capable of acutely dissecting the bullet points needed for the upcoming negotiation. The contrast between the duality of this individual person was jarring, but also welcomed. He was now on the bridge to resume his normal duties. Apparently, there was a new Midshipman on board.

Finding everything on the Bridge to be in a very nominal and otherwise normal status, he set to find the Tactical Departments new midshipman.

Powl caught a glance from Commander Keir. Hir subtle nod to the direction of the new crew member did find his eyes settling on a new Midshipman deeply involved in tactical training scenarios on the Bridge. Powl walked directly to the station presently occupied by the ship's newest arrival.

"Computer pause training," Torok waited for the program to pause before addressing the trainee, "Greeting Midshipman, I am Lieutenant Torok Powl, Chief Tactical Officer."

Ameen turned his attention from the tactical console, where Lieutenant Powl was now formally greeting the eager Midshipman Brennan. He was pleased to see his new department head taking the initiative.

At that moment, the turbolift doors opened again, revealing a new, remarkably tall saurian midshipman in an Engineering uniform. Ameen watched as the young officer approached and delivered a crisp, formal introduction, handing his PADD to Commander Keir.

Ameen offered a welcoming smile.

"Midshipman A'kilees, I'm Commander Morad Ameen. On behalf of the entire crew, welcome to the Zephyr." His eyes glanced at the PADD in Keir's hand as s/he accepted it, catching the highlights of the midshipman's academic focus. "Starship design and transporter systems," Ameen noted aloud, a note of genuine approval in his voice. "An impressive record. We're glad to have you, Midshipman."

He then looked to Keir.

"You're right, Commander," he said, his voice carrying a note of quiet satisfaction. "It's good to see our engineering department reinforced with a specialist."

His gaze returned to A'kilees.

"You've arrived at a busy time, as we're preparing for a new mission, but your skills will be put to good use. Commander Keir is not only our First Officer but also our Chief Engineer. S/he will get you formally situated with the team and begin your familiarization with the ship."

Two new officers in one shift, Ameen thought. Both seem promising. We're going to need them.

It was quite the privilege to be serving on the Zephyr, both the commanding officer and the captain were and had been engineers themselves and hearing both the recognition from Commander Keir and the compliment from Captain Ameen made A'kilees feel very dignified in that moment.

“Thank you sir, I appreciate*gwar* your kind words” replied A’kilees with a smile only his reptilian face was capable of while attempting to keep his composure while on the Bridge. “I’m also well studied in various other starship systems so please be sure to rely on me when needed.” he affirmed though his thoughts went immediately as to what Captain Ameen had mentioned.

A new mission? Already? A’kilees pondered curiously as he stared slightly past Captain Ameen into empty space. This information seemed a tad sudden and perturbed him slightly. A’kilees considered that his expertise and professionalism would be constantly tested and these would be the types of challenges to be expected while serving on a starship in deep space. Paying close attention to both his commanding officers would be educational and beneficial from this point forward.

The saurian straightened himself towards the captain and made an effort to not show any concern on his face.

“I’m looking forward to working with Commander Kier and providing assistance with the ongoing mission where I can, sir.” A'kilees continued. “In the meantime I hope to accustom myself with the ship and the crew soon. It has been a pleasure making your acquaintance Captain. Thank you for your time.” he concluded, nodding respectfully towards his new captain.

Ameen returned the midshipman's respectful nod. "We're glad to hear it, Midshipman. That kind of initiative will serve you well here. I have no doubt you will be a valuable addition to the team... and... you may address me as Commander for the time being if you please."

He then looked to his First Officer, who was standing beside him. "Commander Keir will take it from here. S/he will see to your quarters and begin your orientation."

With a final, welcoming nod to A'kilees, Ameen turned back toward the center of the bridge. He allowed himself a moment of satisfaction, observing both new midshipmen now under the wing of his senior officers.

The ship is stronger today than it was yesterday...

"Carry on, Commander," he said to Keir, his attention already shifting back to the ship's main operations.

==Apologies for the wait==

The young Saurian towered over Keir by about a foot but his manners and preparedness were appropriately professional and his replies to the CO's comments were well said and pertinent.

[I’m looking forward to working with Commander Kier and providing assistance with the ongoing mission where I can, sir.] A'kilees continued. [In the meantime, I hope to accustom myself with the ship and the crew soon. It has been a pleasure making your acquaintance Captain. Thank you for your time.] he concluded, nodding respectfully towards his new captain.

Keir gave hir new Middie a welcoming smile. and to the CO; a nod, which he would recognize his FO's intention to bring hir new officer down to Main Engineering. The CO was not tied down to unnecessary formality when not needed, and with that though s/he caught the new officer's eye.

"Welcome to the Zephyr Midshipman Peleus I am Lieutenant Commander Keir77 and along with being the First Officer it is my pleasure to welcome you to my Engineering team. You have been formally greeted and are now an officer in my command; and as usual in these circumstances I will now take you down to Engineering where you can familiarize with the crew and the ship."

S/he took a step towards the lift and gestured to imply that the Middie was to follow hir., adding some protocol advice as they walked. "By way of making you aware of something important you should know that despite appearing to be a female Officer ; I am in fact a member of a race referred to as Hermat. You can do some research on your own time but going forward you can refer to me as Commander or Chief."

S/he entered the lift and as hir newest officer boarded s/he added. 'While we proceed please feel free to ask any questions you might have on your mind."

Brennan was working diligently on the simulation, making sure to take time to understand every maneuver he was working on.  Just before finalizing a situation, he heard from behind him, "Computer, pause training."  He froze for a minute as it was a different voice than he had heard yet.  He only expected the first officer to stop what he was working on, and then the voice continued to speak.  "Greeting, Midshipman, I am Lieutenant Torok Powl, Chief Tactical Officer."

Oh, good, I finally get my true assignment!

Brennan would stand up and straighten his uniform and reply with an offer of a handshake.

"Greetings, Lieutenant Powl, I am Midshipman Michael Brennan at your service.  I look forward to working with you more closely and learning the final points of tactical from you."

“Oh yes, of course.” A’kilees was a bit flustered from his mistake. “Apologies, Commander.” A’klees turned away from his commanding officer, lightly perturbed at himself for his error, luckily it seemed that Commander Ameen was a leader tolerable of small mistakes by crew members, especially new ones. This assured the saurian that this vessel would be a tolerating place as well as accepting. Taking that moment to compose himself, A’kilees looked towards the First Officer, Lieutenant Commander Keir77 who was offering a welcoming smile.

“Welcome to the Zephyr Midshipman Peleus. I am Lieutenant Commander Keir77 and along with being the first officer it is my pleasure to welcome you to my Engineering team. S\he took a step towards the lift and gestured to A’kilees to follow her to which A’kilees accompanied her inside with the doors closing behind them. “By way of making you aware of something important, you should know that despite appearing to be a female Officer; I am in fact a member of a race referred to as Hermat. You can do some research on your own time but going forward you can refer to me as Commander or Chief.” s/he remarked. “While we proceed please feel free to ask any questions you might have on your mind.”

A’kilees nodded in acknowledgement as he took out his PADD from his bag. “Thank you for the explanation Chief. I previously had a look at your Starfleet profile but I’ll be sure to assess myself further on the Hermat.” he replied as he jotted down a quick note pertaining to further researching hir people. The saurian looked back up towards Keir “I do have a few questions for you but the most important ones are; what issues does the Engineering crew have currently onboard Zephyr and what responsibilities *clickclick* would you want me to carry out during my time here? I’m eager to get started right away.”

On the way to Engineering Keir's new Middie had some fairly serious questions about what were the issues the Engineers were facing and S/he allowed hirself a smile. "To be honest Midshipman we have a great team and as a rule unless the ship is under attack or some extraordinary event occurs it is simply doing your job and ensuring that all systems are doing what they are supposed to do.

It can get exciting at times but I am happier when all the moving parts including the biological ones are working exactly as they are supposed to."

Keir understood the desire to find big issues and be the one who solved them. And as the door opened Keir added, "Welcome to main Engineering Midshipman"

"Greetings, Lieutenant Powl, I am Midshipman Michael Brennan at your service.  I look forward to working with you more closely and learning the final points of tactical from you."

Eager?  Yes, but Academy instruction indicates adequate performance.  "At ease and welcome aboard."

His bio was somewhat a mix of different directions.  Clearly Brennan was assigned to the tactical department, however his biography clearly indicated divided interests in several complimentary areas to Security as well.  Most Midshipman would begin at the helm of the star ship, but the Zephyr was certainly a different craft completely.

"I am unfamiliar with these "final points" that you are expecting, however there is a great deal to learn from experience aboard a Star Fleet vessel.  In your particular case, what specific areas of study do you wish to pursue?  Be assured, any information that I feel may be useful to you will be provided. I will be handling Operations per standard code as CTO.  However, your bio indicated more studies in martial development.  Curious that you chose tactical and not security?"

Powl had the naturally emotionally void expression of a Vulcan as he identified an opportunity.  The department was fortunate to have an additional officer, and currently Lieutenant Tom Krandall has been handling the helm.  While he is an excellent pilot and helmsman, it would be prudent to put his skills to use in a more complex role.

"For now, Midshipman Brennan, I will assign you to weapons control.  The greater plan at play is this: LEARN the Zephyr.  She is different than any other vessel currently operating as she is a floating tribute to previous Star Fleet technology.  My expectation is this, our department was trained on using technology from the current era and while quite the vessel, she is using some very old setups.  Therefore, you will need to learn this ship.  A typical assignment for a fresh Midshipman would be to operate the helm.

Regardless, the Zephyr is anything but typical.  You will focus your attentions to mastering the weapons array, and 2 hours of your day will be training with Lieutenant Krandall on the flight characteristics of this vessel.  Rest assured, she is an adequate vessel for her assignment.  The new challenges presented by operating an otherwise formerly notated obsolete vessel necessitates a special learning curve."

Powl shifted himself to allow a gesture towards the helm.  "Given your previous training and experience, I expect you to be proficient in the piloting of this vessel within one week.  You will be assigned as helmsman moving forward after that time."

Torok turned to face Brennan directly again and dropped his motioning hand to his side.

"Welcome aboard, and do you have any questions?"

Brennan listened to his commanding officer with both excitement and humility.  He was right; he had focused a great amount on his martial aspects within the academy, and with good reason as well.

"Before I ask any question, perhaps it would be best to answer yours first.  You inquired about my desire to work with tactical systems rather than security.  In my mind, the best security comes from denying access to anyone who would seek to cause us harm in the first place.  What is tactical but long-range security, sir?"

His face changed slightly as he continued answering the Lieutenant's questions.

"I simply wish to learn the ship's every weakness and strength so I can best assist in a trying situation.  At the moment, it seems best to know the weapons systems as you suggest and to become intimately familiar.  To perform the best of my abilities, I need to know its blind spots, best attack angles, and areas where the shield just doesn't act the same.  All of this information will help me develop to my absolute best and one day to help in those situations where I may be needed the most.  Every ship will have its quirks."

He shifted his stance to a more comfortable position as he was assigned to his station.  He indeed was very eager to learn just what this ship could do, especially given the aforementioned upcoming mission.

Don't try to impress; simply think and speak logically, and you should get along just fine with him.  There is no reason to worry.  Obviously, he will think logically in a tactical situation.  Perhaps he will see your point of view.

"The only other thing I need to say, sir, is thank you for the opportunity.  My ma wouldn't allow me to perform otherwise."  He felt the slight southern talking pattern escape his mouth at the last second in a form of informality.   "If there is nothing else, I am ready to work."

He gestured over to the weapons control panel, almost asking permission for the conversation to be complete so he could master the interface.

Keir was busy handling the issues of the hour, when notification of the latest new Officer showed up on hir Padd and turning in hir seat s/he caught the attention of the Chief Science Officer "Commander Ra'an I have good news; it would appear that you new Middie has arrived."

In keeping with procedure Keir informed Cdr Ameen on his Padd that the new Midshipman was about to be summoned.

S/he then tapped hir comm. badge;

"Greetings Midshipman Cortez, welcome to the Zephyr.
After we complete your greetings I will introduce you to your Department Head Cdr Ra'an; Keir77 out."

Sebastian made his way to the Bridge; his heart was racing with a mixture of excitement and uncertainty. Excitement from the standpoint that the Zephyr crew is legendary. Uncertainty from the standpoint that these people have worked together for years, and he was the newbie, would they accept him into their close-knit family? But the crew of the Zephyr was, in fact, the legendary crew of the USS Titania. The rumor was that the USS Titania was sent on an Ultra Top Secret, Classified mission and that a especially trained crew was assigned to the Titania and the original crew was assigned to the newly commissioned USS Zephyr, Sebastian wasn’t sure if that was true, but back at the Academy everyone heard the stories of Captain Ameen were the stuff that inspired young Cadet. Ameen was what Picard was to the cadet in the 2360’s. Sebastian wasn’t sure how true those stories were, but there was usually a grain of truth  in those stories

But it stood to reason that the stories had to be true as a Star Ship Captain had to be a skilled diplomat, a brilliant tactician, a hard as steel warrior, a cutthroat negotiator, and an exemplary officer, but a Star Ship Captain had to be all things to all people.

Sebastian was amazed at the efficiency of the crew. How had the First Officer  Keir77 known that Sebastian had arrived? Clearly the First Officer had the crew monitor all access points to check for new arrivals, especially replacement or new crew members and they in turn reported the new arrivals to the First Officer, Keir77, that was a Hermat name; the voice that came over his com badge sounded female. The Hermats were one of a few hermaphroditic species that the Federation knew of.  Sebastian found their use of personal pronouns fascinating; they used terms like hir rather than 'him' or 'her, or hish for the possessive forms of his and hers, or s/he' with a separately accented H rather than she or he. That brought to mind, do they switch between genders?

Sebastian knew this was his moment to shine, to start his Star Fleet career, but he was scared; this wasn’t the Holodeck, where if you made a mistake, you could always rest it. Sebastian had a problem with Holodecks, in that the programs had everything perfect, Perfect Officers, who were programmed with all the right answers. In holodeck simulations, complex algorithms controlled a character's response, governed by elaborate software.

Relax, Sebastian, relax, you've trained for this. YOU can do it.

Sebastian stepped off the turbo lift and onto the Bridge, the noise hit him like a tidal wave. Officers were calling out orders, calling for pre-flight checks of all systems, weapons inventory, medical supplies, and engineering readiness.

The Zephyr was a new ship; it had a very sleek, efficient design, it even had a new ship smell. Sebastian, realizing he was in the way, stepped to the left of the turbo lift entrance, where he saw the Zephyr’s Dedication Plaque, he read the dedication quote: "Fair laughs the morn, and soft the zephyr blows." That line was from the 1757 poem, "The Bard: A Pindaric Ode" by Thomas Gray. It describes a beautiful and pleasant morning, which serves as a contrast to the poem's tragic and violent backstory about the massacre of Welsh bards by King Edward I. The line is often quoted in reference to the beautiful imagery of a peaceful morning at sea, particularly a ship sailing in "gallant trim" with "Youth on the prow, and Pleasure at the helm". Which made sense, the Zephyr was a gallant ship well well-trimmed, and it’s crewed by youth

The Bridge was the standard Star Fleet layout, a large multifunction view screen, and a few feet away was the Operations Station, which was vacant at the moment. He then spotted a Tall Vulcan sitting at Tactical. He had jet black hair and brown eyes with typical short Vulcan hair; his complexion was a dark olive tone.

Sebastian brought up the crew manifest in his mind. He had studied it, that had to be Lieutenant Torock Powl. Sebastian watched as the Vulcan's hands graced the control of his station with decisive, logical movements.

Normally, he didn’t enjoy the company of Vulcan’s as everything revolved around Logic, but that changed when he became friends with his Academy rival, a Vulcan named T’Sel. She was brilliant, but the two of them didn’t hit it off at first.

Sebastian's attention was then drawn to the area behind the Command Center. There was a Klingon; he was at least six feet tall, he had dark brown eyes, shoulder-length black hair, and a dark complexion.

That’s when Sebastian remembered the Zephyr crew manifest listed the Chief of Security as a Klingon named Gath.

Sebastian found it hard to work with Klingons as everything they did, everything they said, was governed by Honor, which made collaboration difficult if not impossible, but he was willing to work past it.

Come on, Sebastian, clearly Gath isn’t a typical Klingon, after all, he’s a Star Fleet Officer and not in the Klingon Defense Force.

Sebastian looked past Gath to the rear of the Bridge, where he spotted a Saurian. The Saurian stood between six feet six and seven feet tall, and it had rich black eyes with emerald flecks in them. He seemed familiar in some manner. The Saurian was a Midshipman just like Sebastian; chances were, he probably had more than a few classes with the Saurian at the Academy, but many of the Academy classes had a large number of cadets in them. Reptilian species Sebastian knew a Saurian back at the Academy, her name was Ss’Veta, her last name was impossible for non-Saurians to pronounce, she had pinkish green scales, and this Saurian had green-gray skin.

The only Saurian that Sebastian recalled seeing on the manifest was A’kilees Peleus. Next to the Sarurian stood an Orion, she was beautiful, she had auburn hair and the most brilliant violet eyes, that's when he recalled his Supervisor was an Orion named Amila Ra'an, Lieutenant Commander Amila Ra'an.

Sebastian's attention was drawn to a lovely human, she had brilliant green eyes and red free free-flowing hair,

Sebastian then remembered that the Zephry’s Chief  Medical Officer was a brilliant redhead with incredible green eyes by the name of Evie O’Fee.

That's when Sebastian's attention was directed to the Command Center of the Bridge. There in the Center Chair was Captain Morad Ameen, he looked to be about five feet ten inches tall and between one hundred eight and two hundred pounds, but it was hard to tell as he was sitting. His hair was black with a few streaks of grey. The Captains were black, they had a vulnerability to them, they were deep, soulful eyes, at least that’s how they appeared to Sebastian; he felt a chill run down his spine. Sebastian wasn’t intimidated easily, not that Captains intentionally intimidate their junior officers, it’s just Sebastian didn’t want to disappoint the Captain.

Yes, Sebastian had never met  Captain Ameen before; it's just that the rumors around the Academy that  Ameen was just that Brilliant an Officer and would soon make Admiral, it's just he felt inspired to just be in the presence of him.

Sitting next to the Captain was a very exotic-looking female; she had brown eyes and black hair, pulled back into a ponytail, revealing she was about five feet five inches tall and between one hundred and forty pounds; she looked fit. So it stood to reason that had to be the Hermat First Officer Keir 77.

Sebastian looked around, and he could see that this was going to be a very interesting assignment. She adjusted his uniform jacket, double-checking it to make sure he was presentable.

Sebastian made his way towards the Command Center. His pulse was racing, his heart pounding; it was like everything was going in slow motion. He reached the Command Center in a few seconds, but to him it seemed like thirty minutes, and came to attention,

Breathe, relax, and breathe.

" Science Midshipman Sebastian Pedro Cortez reporting for duty,” said Sebastian as he handed over his Data Padd containing his orders.

Amila Ra'an spun around in her chair, her ponytail swinging slight behind her as she popped up from her chair.

"Hello, Midshipman, that was quick," she replied with a smile as she walked down the ramp and into the well of the Bridge, with spring in her step. "I'm really excited to have you aboard. If you're comfortable jumping right into things, I can let you in on what's going on this evening and how our department is involved," she offered.

"If there is nothing else, I am ready to work."

Powl raised an eyebrow.  Although human dialect was similar to that of Vulcan, it was also clear that there are some variations even within the species on the home planet.

Yes the southern United States yielded a strange set of idiosyncratic variations resulting in the deletion, addition, creation, and chaos of throwing vowels haphazardly into words.

"Yes, report to your station.  Hopefully we don't need to test the defensive capabilities of the Zephyr, but this department will exercise all due vigilance to ensure that should that need arise, the Zephyr will be adequately prepared."

Perhaps I need to work on small talk.  Studies have indicated it is a good way to begin conversations when involving humans.

Ameen had watched the young officer pause by the dedication plaque near the turbolift. He appreciated that. A moment of respect for the vessel and her history often signaled a thoughtful mind—a good quality in a scientist.

When Cortez approached the command center, Ameen could practically feel the nervous energy radiating off him. The Midshipman was stiff, his heart rate likely double the norm, standing at rigid attention.

Ameen accepted the PADD with a deliberate, calm motion, his demeanor steady and grounding. He scanned the orders briefly before meeting the young man's eyes with a reassuring look.

"At ease, Midshipman," Ameen said softly, offering a small, welcoming smile to break the tension. "We are happy to have you. A science officer who appreciates the history of his vessel is always a welcome addition."

He glanced up as Lieutenant Ra'an spun in her chair and bounded down into the well with her usual infectious energy. Ameen's smile widened slightly.

"And it appears," he continued, handing the PADD back to Cortez, "that your Department Head is eager to get you started. Lieutenant Ra'an runs one of the finest science departments in the fleet. If you can keep up with her intellect and her energy, you will do very well here."

He gave Cortez a final, firm nod. "Go join her, Midshipman. Welcome to the Zephyr."

Sebastian couldn’t believe it, he was standing face-to-face with a Star Fleet legend, Captain Morad Ameen, and his heart was racing with excitement. The thought of learning under such an officer was what Cadets only dream of.

Sebastian was beyond nervous, his mind racing with everything he had learned at the Academy, as he didn’t want to make a mistake.

"At ease, Midshipman," Ameen said softly, offering a small, welcoming smile to break the tension. "We are happy to have you. A science officer who appreciates the history of his vessel is always a welcome addition."

Sebastian smiled a little bit, not at the Captain telling him to be at ease, but rumor had it that Captain Ameen was rumored to be over six feet five.

Aren’t all legends larger than life?

Sebastian noticed a green figure moving in the background,

"And it appears," Ameen continued, handing the PADD back to Cortez, "that your Department Head is eager to get you started. Lieutenant Ra'an runs one of the finest science departments in the fleet. If you can keep up with her intellect and her energy, you will do very well here."

He gave Cortez a final, firm nod. "Go join her, Midshipman. Welcome to the Zephyr."

Sebastian smiled, “Thank you, Captain, I have no doubt that I will learn a great del for both you and Lieutenant Ra’an.” Said Sebastian, his tone respectful and excited.

Sebastian was a bit surprised when  Amila Ra’an, the Zephyr's Chief Science Officer, spun around, her ponytail swinging slightly behind her. It reminded him of his kid sister Sofia

"Hello, Midshipman, that was quick," Said Ra’an with a smile as she walked down the ramp and into the well of the Bridge, with spring in her step. Sebastian smiled as he felt welcomed. There was a vibe he could feel; it wasn’t just that something was going on, it was like the crew was more than just a crew, it was like they were a big family, and Cortez liked that, as he was from a big family.

"I'm really excited to have you aboard. If you're comfortable jumping right into things, I can let you in on what's going on this evening and how our department is involved," Offered Lt. Ra’an.

Sebastian was more than ready, after four years at the Academy learning the theoretical, he was ready for the practical side of things. “Yes, Lieutenant, I’m ready said Sebastian, taking position at the auxiliary Science Station.
