The Shuttle ride had been long. Too long for newly appointed Midshipman Emery Tyris-McEntyre. Not that he was complaining, mind you. He was used to the long boredom of intersystem flights. Five hours on a small shuttle, especially for one of his broad stature could be challenging. He shifted in his seat, trying to get comfortable. After four long years of Starfleet Medical Academy, he had finally gotten his first duty assignment and a Starship, no less. If he was anyone else, this would be an exciting moment. First time on a starship could be overwhelming to some. For Emery, it was just another day. He’d grown up on starships. His fathers were both Starfleet. His Caitian father, an Admiral. His Betazed father, a Science Officer. It had surprised them both when Emery, all of 12, came up to them and told them he wanted to be a surgeon, like his Uncle J.R.
The shuttle banked, snapping Emery from his thoughts. He looked over to the window aside his seat, seeing the line of drydocks with various ships. The one he was heading for drew closer. A Steamrunner class starship. Small, nimble, agile starships. Small crews too. Something he could ease in too. He wasn't a fan of crowds, though, his roommate, Christian, had drawn him out some during their years at the Academy. Both of them got lucky, being on the Medical track together. They hit it off almost immediately, sharing stories and quickly falling into routines. He learned from Christian to socialize more, get to know his peers. It had been some fun. Now, the real work began. Duty was at Emery's forefront, something that his father, Elias, had instilled in him from as far as he could remember. Duty, Honor, the guiding principles of Starfleet.
“This is it. Remember what dad said, the first step of the journey is the hardest." Emery smiled to himself, it had been his first day at the Academy when his father, Elias, had told him that gem of wisdom. How right he had been.
The shuttle gracefully flew between the frames of the drydock, angling for the shuttlebay of the Steamruuner. He heard the static of the shuttle passing through the forcefield, slowing down and with a small thud, landed on the deck. He stood, picked up his duffel bag, and with a tug of his uniform tunic, stood before the ramp. A few moments later, it opened, thudding to the deck with a clunk. Emery took a deep breath in, and stepped aboard.
The shuttlebay manager, Emery saw, stood before the large double doors, checking in the new arrivals. Emery approached, setting down his duffel and snapped to attantion.
"Midshipman Emery Tyris-McEntyre, reporting for duty." He announced as he presented his PADD to the officer before him.
