“Could be nothing,” replied the Midshipman.“But Mister Tomer is confirmed in his quarters and hasn’t responded to the chime. I’ve got Medical and Security looped in on an open channel in case this turns into something more than a welfare check.”
Bailey nodded as she took in the information.
“You’re just in time, Petty Officer…?”
“Crescent, Ma'am. Bailey Crescent.” She replied curtly, half expecting the officer to give her name in return. But the woman continued with her briefing.
“Good, Take position on the far side of the doorway, out of the line of the opening.” Continued the Midshipman gesturing to the other side of the doorway with her chin. “If this is a medical issue, I want you there to help clear space for the med team. If it’s not…”
“Understood.” Bailey replied, lowering her hand for the first time toward her sidearm.
“We treat it like any other potentially compromised compartment until we know otherwise.”
Bailey took a slow deep breath through her nose to steady herself. This wasn't her first rodeo, but they always seemed to come out of the blue when you least expected them. And until that door was open, they could speculate what they'd find on the other side until the cows came home as her Pop used to say.
“I’m going to give him one more chance to answer before we escalate,” Said the Midshipman, then in a lower tone she added as if taking to herself; “No point in kicking over a hornet’s nest if he’s just asleep.”
“Mister Tomer, this is Midshipman Wright, Security, You have Medical and Security on standby. Please acknowledge, sir.”
Bailey shifted her weight a little to favour her ankle and glanced between the officer and the door jam waiting for one or the other to react first.
