"Ensign Tillen, even in my relatively limited experience, 'weird' is often the most efficient lead-in to a situation." He offered her a slight smile, as his antennae swivelled subtly side-to-side. "Now we have the enviable task of finding out what's causing it to be weird."
Ris paused a moment to gather his thoughts, and Ensign Tillen seemed to relax a little with the humor.
"Some first steps would be to analyze the source of the compounds, and as a precaution, we should both don our PPE."
He pointed towards a locker with rebreather style filter masks and goggles.
"Make sure the elastic band on the goggles is adjusted so it keeps them snug around your eyes."
Ris expeditiously donned his own respirator and goggles, his voice now slightly muffled as he spoke.
"I'll buddy check your fit, then you can check mine, sir."
After both had verified the fit of their PPE, Ris continued.
"I am going to check for any EM patterns that are out of the ordinary. I would like you to scan the fungi's capillary system and check it against baseline scans. We'll figure out where we go from there once we get that data."
