Reyna's eye went wide, "Real dress shopping, with changing rooms and things? I don't really understand fashion, as preferences seem so subjective, but I trust your judgement on the matter. I only know what I like and I've been told that some of my preferences are a bit silly."
Beno couldn't help but to giggle a little. "You just described dress shopping perfectly, trying out a bunch of dresses that you would never buy or wear again until you came to the one you really want. When you are dress shopping its more about the experience then the purchase, it once took me three hours to pick out a dress I didn't buy at the end." The thought of Alex going through the same thing for any clothing was a little silly. "Believe me this is going to be better than shopping with your dad, it probably never ended with getting your nails done." Beno loved getting her nails done, but seldom got them done.
At one point, as they were sitting there, Reyna leaned her head against Beno and said quietly and very sincerely, "Thank you for this. I know it's a little bit selfish of me to steal you away from dad, but it felt very important. I can't always define it right away, but intuition can be like that. The brain is capable of a great many things and some of it happens on the subconscious level, so we aren't always aware of some of the factors it is considering, but it is often correct in how it tells us things. My dad has had lots of time to get to know you and over that time, he has decided that you should be part of our family. I may have a bit of catching up to do, but I agree with him. We agree on most things. The fact that you wanted to do this too, that tells me you agree as well. You didn't hesitate at all. I found that to be important. Please don't feel offended if I seem to over analyze things. Part of it is genetic and I'm sure you've noticed my dad does it too. It's hard to describe, because I didn't grow up like other kids. My dad understood that, which is why we came to live on the ship, so I could grow up a bit more like normal kids do. Well, normal kids who live on starships anyway. I think you're wonderful and I love that you make me feel more normal. That feeling is really important to me."
Beno grabbed her hand cupping it in hers. "No this isn't selfish of you, and you are right, I didn't hesitate to do this nor would I ever. You are right there is lots of time that I have to be with your dad, we work together granted we can't do a lot of things we can now. It just makes our time together a little more special, the anticipation of when we can makes it better. This time between us is really special to me, besides when you are an Officer people are always doing that. I actually think its flattering, it means I am doing something right." She had a bit of a giggle until Beno made a bit of a connection.
She then gave a sigh and stood up to look at Beno and ask, "So, what kind of dress do you think will look best on me?"
Beno shrugged her shoulders. "I have no idea about what dress would look best on you, that's what the experience is all about. There are a lot variables to take into account, the most important one is what feels best at the time." Beno got up extending her hand to Reyna, and both went to the dress shop where the first sign said to remove shoes.
Right after they entered and took off their shoes a clerk came to them "Welcome ladies must be a wonderful Mother daughter day, if you follow me I will take you to the private fitting area. Red wine and Apple juice?" He asked and Beno agreed to it as they went to a room with lots of mirrors on the wall, there were also two padds one for each of them. "Lets look at a few in this case I like to reverse engineer from good ideas that start from bad ones, like this one." Beno selected it and it came in, Beno put it on. The sundress looked like an old-fashioned sailor dress, the colors were all wrong, but the material was soft. The anchor on the front and hips made it a little mor hideous. "The mirror in your room might help pick things out faster, but will never give the feeling this will." She winked while looking for dresses for Reyna, they were going to match so it would have to be appropriate for both. "I would love to see what you have for an idea, and remember I want you to feel your way through this. No thoughts about practicality, function, or even how it looks. I just want you to trust your instinct about what might look horrible, and pick it. That's what this experience is all about, not over thinking and having fun." Beno waited to see how this would go with her, hopefully this was going to be equally as enjoyable.
