The more time Beno spent with Reyna, the more something inside her began to open. For the longest time, she had wanted to be a mother. After her husband passed, that dream felt like something that would never happen, so she buried herself in her career instead.
Watching Reyna change from dress to dress reminded Beno of being a child herself, doing the exact same thing with her own mother. Those had been some of her favorite memories — simple moments filled with laughter, honesty, and quiet affection. There was something her mother had once told her that felt just as important now as it had back then.
As Beno slipped into a silk dress with a cool summer style, the fabric glided across her skin. The lace hugged every curve and highlighted her spots beautifully. No matter how much she loved a uniform, it had never truly flattered anyone. This dress, however, felt designed to celebrate who she was rather than hide it. Reyna’s complexion would have the same effect.
“Something my mother told me when I was young,” Beno began, studying herself in the mirror before looking over at Reyna, “is that there’s a difference between a man’s world and a woman’s world that neither will ever fully understand. It has nothing to do with intelligence. We’re simply built differently.” A faint smile crossed her lips.
“A lot of what we do is because it feels good. Every outfit we put on is a statement — we just have to decide what statement we want to make. Sometimes what we wear isn’t practical or functional at all. Most of the time, we dress because we like how it makes us feel. Makeup is the same way.” She adjusted one of the sleeves gently.
“And none of it is silly. There’s a whole world of things we can explore together. Right now, we’re exploring what feels good in the here and now. Tomorrow, I’ll have to go back to my uniform.”
Beno was loving this far more than she could properly express — dress shopping with a little wine and someone she was beginning to care for deeply. After leaving the dress shop in their new outfits, the rest of their purchases were sent back to their quarters. The nail salon was only a short walk away, and the two walked there hand in hand.
Their chairs sat side by side while the beauticians went to work. Reyna’s nails took a little extra care since it was her first manicure, especially around the cuticles, while Beno had the same treatment done alongside her. The colors they chose complemented both of their skin tones perfectly, vibrant without being overwhelming.
“There are a lot of things I want to teach you,” Beno said softly, watching Reyna admire the progress, “and all of it takes time. But the most important thing is this — always hold your head high. Confidence changes how people respond to you.”
She lifted one hand slightly as the polish dried. “Take care of yourself, every little detail from the top of your head to the tips of your toes. We do these things for ourselves. If we only do them for other people, then the meaning disappears.”
A little lipstick, subtle blush, and light eye shadow completed the look — just enough to accentuate without overpowering. “There are times we dress for others,” Beno continued, “but those are special occasions. Most of the time, this is about how you feel.” Her eyes softened.
“When we truly feel good about ourselves, it creates a kind of glow that’s unique to us. People notice it. They respond to it without even realizing why. In a way, taking care of ourselves helps the people around us feel better too.”
Beno smiled warmly.
“So never call this silly. These little pleasures matter more than people think. They help make life healthier, happier… not just for us, but for everyone close to us. That’s the beautiful part.” By the time they finished, dinner was drawing close, and the two of them looked absolutely radiant.
