This was a conversation that Beno knew was coming for a long time, it was with someone else but this was probably the best teachable moment there was. I don't like to think of myself as smarter than people, or them any less because they don't understand on a level I do. That kind of thing is tearing people down in order to feel better about myself, I have always believed in validation and building people up. It doesn't matter to me if it's chevron, or pip I command the same level of respect that I give."
It was almost almost time to go to dinner. "Everyone is extremely intelligent with something that they are passionate about, while coming up short somewhere. Where I am a brilliant scientist that was equally talented with leadership abilities. Where I fall short is I can never swim, I don't know much of anything about Engineering. I don't want them to talk down to me for not knowing these things, so I won't do the same to them. I found that when I talk at a level too much for them to understand, it's talking at them not to them. The mark of a good leader is a person who can Bridge the distance, and that's everywhere not just in the Military." Beno made a career doing that, and it carried her far.
