Reyna appeared to struggle with this one, "I hear what you're saying, and that appears to be true within Star Fleet, because people have had to meet certain criteria and have been educated to a certain level, but...well...I think of the average person's level of intelligence and then remind myself that half of the people are below that. I know not to hold it against them, as it is not their fault. There is willful ignorance in some people, which I understand from an academic point of view, but the logic eludes me on a personal level. It just frustrates me is all. I originally thought that if I could understand something, then others should be able to as well, but I quickly learned that was not the case and was very unfair of me to think like that. I can accept that most people have a gift or talent in an area. I also agree with you that it is best to work with people and treat them with respect. I'll have to see if I eventually have what it takes to be a leader, but I do like helping people."
She shook her head slowly, "Since my mind has started to feel what others are feeling or thinking and I am still learning how to block things out, what I hear or feel often bothers me. The amount of greed, selfishness and desire to hurt other people is disturbing. I often know when someone is lying and it is hard to pretend that I don't know. My dad says that's part of why I need to learn, not just because it is polite, but because sometimes knowing something can get me into trouble." Reyna smiled at Beno and seemed happy again as she shifted the conversation slightly, "You seem to be adapting well to the bond you've made with my dad. I totally understood that part and was very happy for him that you two found each other. I'm still trying to adjust for our bond. An Imzadi sort of bond is one thing, but nobody prepared me for...well...this. I knew about stuff with your parents, so I was prepared for my dad. You must be pretty amazing to have been able to form a bond with me."
Reyna softened her voice even more and there was something about the look in her eyes as a feeling extended from Reyna and spread through Beno, "I think it is because of who you are deep inside. In your heart, you try to find good in people and want to build connections. I knew that right away, because it is like a light that is all around you." The feeling retreated a little and Beno could tell Reyna was a little embarrassed for a second and blushed, "I'm also working real hard on not picking up things people think or feel, unless I'm supposed to, but please don't let it make you feel weird about me when I say this next thing. Um...I want to ask you to do us all a favor by telling my dad something. He knows I'm very aware about you two and feels like he needs to have a talk with me about it. He doesn't know how to and is worried about messing it up. I need you to tell him that you had the talk with me. He wants to explain the whole love and mating thing, you know, THAT talk." She chuckled and rolled her eyes, "I understand it completely. Neither of you two can think about each other without it stirring up those thoughts and memories very clearly, though I have to admit that now I get it about why adults are so crazy over the subject. The stuff I had read about it did not prepare me for the reality, but I guess it would never have been able to. That's why there are so many songs and poems about it, right? Anyway, do you think you can try and find a way to let him know he's off the hook, or is this just something I need to let him go through as a growing experience for him?"
